Biometrics company will supply the enrollment and verification kiosks; but will anyone use them?

Undeterred by recent reports that few Americans are interested in the Registered Traveler Program, Steven Brill’s Verified Identity Pass last week announced a $50 million deal with L-1 Identity Solutions for that company to provide and maintain enrollment and verfication kiosks at airports in the United States. “Through this partnership, L-1 Identity Solutions will provide the Clear Registered Traveler program with comprehensive services to ensure that all enrolment and verification operations are supported by industry-leading components and services,” said Robert LaPenta. Whether anyone will actually end up using the kiosks, however, remains uncertain. According to one recent Deloitte survey, 1 percent of travelers were unaware of the Registered Traveler program, while a whopping 83 percent of travelers were not interested in it even after hearing a description of it. By comparison, 83 percent were aware of the new WHTI passport regulations for travel to Mexico and Canada.
