Michigan college offers biometric degree

Davenport University is the second in the country to offer such a program; southerners can take a try at West Virginia U.

Perhaps some of our readers have a teenage child interested in biometrics? They might consider showing him some literature from Davenport University, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 141-year-old private school which has a large number of campuses throughout southern Michigan and northeastern Indiana, offers degrees in business, technology and health professions, the Associated Press reported. Now the school is the first in the state to offer two- and four-year degress in biometric security, with graduates hoping to find jobs in a industry that has grown from $300 million in 2001 to more than $2 billion last year. West Virginia University is the only college in the country with a similar program, offering an engineering degree specializing in biometric devices.

So far, fifty-five students have signed up for the Davenport courses, and while few would question their enthusiasm, some are just starting to get acquainted with the topic. “From what I’ve gained from my research, it’s looking to replace a lot of older technology, like PIN numbers and things like that,” said freshman Todd Fortier.
