More security breaches at O'Hare

Do you know how many employee nadges at O’Hare are missing or are unaccounted for? 3,807, that’s how many

O’Hare is one of the busiest airports in the United States, but it may well have another distinction: It may be one of the nation’s most vulnwerable, too. Two CBS reporters have learned that 47 employee access badges are missing, bringing the total number of unaccountable employee badges to 3,807 — the biggest security failure involving access badges ever to be exposed. CBS2Chicago’s Dave Savini reports that officials at O’Hare International Airport are refusing to interview with CBS 2 about the station’s latest findings.

Airport employees are allowed to go through a back gate, and all they have to do is show their access badge. They are not searched. The latest missing badges belong to employees of Mesa Airlines, which operates flights for United Express. One of them belonged to Pinkston, who worked as a flight attendant. Employees told CBS that fired employees are not always asked for their badges back, and that employees often share security codes or “piggyback” by following someone through open doors to gain access to secure areas.

Note that Mesa Airlines has already been fined $47,000 because of the missing badges.
