The U.K. Ministry of Defense has opened a cybersecurity test range, where utilities and banks can pit their networks against human hackers and computer viruses

A cybersecurity test range, where utilities and banks can pit their networks against human hackers and computer viruses, is being opened by the U.K. Ministry of Defense this week.

New Scientist reports that teams of “ethical hackers” have been hired to ensure that the range, in Fareham, Hampshire, delivers realistic threats, says a spokesman for Northrop Grumman, which helped to build the facility.

The center has the computing power to simulate attacks on an entire nation’s networks, and a secure dedicated link to the U.S. National Security Agency’s (NSA) own cyber range in Maryland should help engineers work out how to fight international swarms of virus-infected computers.
