The DSC 1100 barrier can stop a 15,000 pound vehicle travelling 40 miles per hour; sally ports at the embassy maximize security

It is the musing of every young boy with a toy dump truck in one hand and a big rock in the other: which will survive a collision? On a much larger scale, that is the business of Palmdale, California-based Delta Scientific, a leading manufacturer of high security barricades and other similar infrastructure protection systems. Take, for instance, the company’s DSC 1100 barriers, now in use at the U.K. embassy in Budapest, Hungary. These 108-inch rising plates can stop a 15,000 pound vehicle traveling forty miles per hour without hardly batting a steel eyebrow. Embassy security is maximized by a sally port, a series of plates which contain incoming cars from the front and the back until the vehicle is cleared for entry. At that point, the front plate is lowered but the back plate remains in place, ensuring that there is always one barrier between the street and the building.
