Individuals could soon be using their pulses as a password.

The Daily Mail reports that researchers in China have developed technology that can recognize an individual’s unique heartbeat for use as a password.

Chun-Liang Lin, a professor at Taiwan’s National Chung Hsing University and the project’s lead researcher, explained, “Because electrocardiogram signals vary from person to person, and can be used as a new tool for biometric recognition.”

Using two ECG readings from an individual’s palm, Lin was able to create a mathematical algorithm that determined the properties of a heartbeat. Lin then turned that number into a highly-secure password.

According to Lin, heartbeats are unique and nearly impossible to spoof, unlike some fingerprint systems that can be circumvented with a photograph.

Eventually, Lin hopes to incorporate pulse biometrics into external hard drives and other systems for added security measures.
