A week from today, Illinois’ top cybersecurity talent will descend upon Moraine Valley Community College outside of Chicago to participate in the annual U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) Cyber Camp. During the week-long camp, individuals will participate in a variety of classes that cover such subjects as packet crafting and pen testing, and compete in a virtual Capture the Flag competition to demonstrate their cybersecurity abilities in a free-form environment in hopes of winning one of the limited (ISC)2 scholarship vouchers.

“With this partnership, the Center and USCC can actively encourage the upcoming generation of cybersecurity professionals,” said Center for Cyber Safety and Education director Patrick Craven. “The most recent (ISC)² Global Information Security Workforce Study revealed a workforce gap in the information security field of 1.5 million in the next five years. We see that as an untapped market of potential information security professionals.”

USCC says that twenty-five individuals, including U.S. Military veterans, will participate in this year’s Illinois USCC camp and competition. Attendees to the invitation-only camps were selected based in part on their scores from Cyber Quests, an online competition offered through USCC in April and May that drew over 900 registrants nationwide.

“In Illinois, as well as across the nation, our private companies and government institutions are experiencing a significant shortfall in the number of highly qualified cybersecurity specialists to fill their operational needs,” stated National Director for U.S. Cyber Challenge Karen S. Evans. “Our intensive weeklong program faces this problem head-on by offering hands-on skill development training and an opportunity to showcase their abilities in the final competition.”

On Friday, 24 June, camp participants will compete in a virtual Capture the Flag competition beginning at 8:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow at 1:00 p.m.

The camp is supported in part through partnerships with the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, NIC, the Association for Federal Information Resources Management (AFFIRM), SANS Institute, Department of Homeland Security, the Federal CIO Council, Cyber Ninjas, Workday, Amazon Web Services, Monster Government Solutions, CenturyLink, AT&T, and PCM-G.
