Nigel Farage Defends Reform UK Candidates Who Are ‘Friends’ with Fascist (Tom Witherow, The Times)
Nigel Farage has defended the 41 candidates found to be social media “friends” of fascist leader, saying: “I apologize that not all of our candidates have been to Eton.”
Close to one in ten candidates for the Reform UK party in England was found to be connected on Facebook with Gary Raikes, the British fascist leader, The Times found.
Raikes, a former organizer for the British National Party, founded the New British Union in the image of Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists, and has called for a “fascist revolution” that would see parliamentary democracy replaced with a dictatorship.
The party’s candidate list has come under scrutiny after The Times revealed last week that its prospective MPs included a racist who referred to a group of black people as “baboons” and a magazine publisher who suggested that convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell did her teenage victims “a favor”.
One Reform candidate, Ian Gribbin, said that Britain should have accepted Hitler’s offer of neutrality before the Second World War.
NATO to Confront Russian ‘Sabotage’ Attempts — Stoltenberg (VOA News)
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday the alliance was looking into ways of countering Russian attempts to “sabotage” the alliance.
The NATO secretary general said defense ministers meeting in Brussels would discuss plans to counter a “Russian campaign of hostile activities against NATO allies,” adding that ministers would work on “response options.”
The alliance is keen to bolster closer intelligence sharing, increase protection of critical infrastructure, and deploy “tighter restrictions on Russian intelligence personnel across the alliance.”
