NEC shows a tablet computing device for biometric identity enrollment and verification using multiple biometrics — and which can also read travel documents; the company says the device will be sold to border control agencies

NEC Europe has announced the launch of a Mobile Biometric Device (MBD) that can also read all current travel documents. The product is described as a front-line security device for border control capable of identity enrollment and verification at any given control point using multiple biometrics.

NEC says the ruggedized tablet computing device enables government agencies to improve their control points by enabling identification at movable control points such as outdoor land crossings, ferries, trains, buses, and within airport terminals.

“Government agencies need mobile, flexible, enhanced border control solutions to manage the steady rise in global customs and border traffic. At the same time, potential risks are growing, necessitating better security,” said Kei Nakata, Manager Identification Solutions Division, NEC Deutschland.

The NEC MBD includes standalone operation or full back-office integration using multiple wireless communication and SIM card covering 3G, GSM, GPRS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

The device is said to provide a 1.6GHZ Intel processor equipped with an optical fingerprint reader. Its 2-megapixel color camera is optimized for facial recognition and allows multi-modal, video-streaming performance. In addition, its 5.6” TFT landscape display with 1024 x 600 resolution is readable in sunlight coupled with a full QWERTY backlit keyboard featuring 58 keys and directional navigational arrows.
