Sungard announces new virtualization product

System intended for those requiring a short-term boost in computing strength after a disaster; large companies continue to jump on the virtualization bandwagon

There is a type of mental health treatment known as visualization therapy, in which patients are instructed to “use the creative powers of the imagination to unlock the healing process in the brain.” We have no opinion on psychiatric matters, but we mention this to make sure that there is no confusion with the virtualization IT recovery products now being offered by Wayne, Pennsylvania-based SunGard Availability Services. Intended for times when business situations require companies to scale up their operations in the short-term, SunGard’s purpose is to provide “capacity-on-demand.” It is not therapy, but the idea is much the same: to take an unpleasant situation and make it right. “More and more, as companies need to recover faster from IT interruptions or disasters, agility has become a business and IT requirement,” said company executive Don Norbeck. No doubt this is a good business to be in. According to Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC, “75 percent of all companies with 500 or more employees are deploying virtual servers.”
