AS&E in $3.4 million deal for backscatter X-ray device

Billerica, Masschusetts-based American Science and Engineering (NASDAQ: ASEI), a developer of powerful backscatter X-ray detection technology, has received an order from an unnamed customer for a cargo X-ray inspection system and a service and maintenance renewal. The total value of the order is $3.4 million and includes spare parts.

AS&E is a forty-five-year veteran in the field of X-ray detection, and it using the revealing backscatter variant in its Z Backscatter Shaped Energy and Radioactive Threat Detection (RTD). The technology offers superior detection of different threats. among them plastic explosives, plastic weapons, illegal drugs, other contraband, dirty bombs, and nuclear devices. Backscatter technology gained fame — or notoriety — when it was used, on a trial basis, at airports to check passengers for concealed weapons. The technology was so sensitive, that security personnel could see anatomically accurate images of passenegrs’ bodies, leading to privacy concerns being raised.
