Schipol airport makes waiting in line more entertaining

Today is the busiest day of the year at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, with some 170,000 passnegrs expected; the airport authorities hired cabaret artists to entertain those standing in long lines at security checkpoints

Here is a new way for starving artists to make a little bit of money, and help the security agencies at the same time. Today is expected to be the busiest day of the year at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport (you know, the one with this catchy motto: “Alle wat u bij ons koopt mag met u meevliegen. Ook drank en parfum”). The airport expects to handle a record number of some 170,000 passengers. Last year the busiest day of the year was 21 July with more than 165,000 passengers.

The queues at passport control will be long, and the lines at security checkpoints even longer. One way the airport authorites have chosen to try and make the waiting in line a bit more bearable: They hired cabaret artists to give performances to entertain the waiting passengers. In a playful way the artists will point out to the passengers what they may and may not take on board the aircraft in the transparent plastic bags.

On average 158,000 passengers a day are travelling via Schiphol Airport in July and August, this is some 8,000 more than last year. The airport expects to handle a total of 9.8 million passengers during the holiday season.
