BearingPoint completes Irish e-passport project

Effort involved modifying existing Automated Passport System to accomodate facial recognition biometrics; project completed by 26 October U.S. visa waiver deadline

The luck of the Irish has held for McLean, Virginia-based BearingPoint. The company announced this week it had succeeded in delivering the Irish government’s e-passport project by the 26 October deadline imposed by the U.S. visa waiver program. The effort took a mere seven months to complete and includes facial recognition technology, stored biographical and digital images, a contactless microchip, and digital signature authentication. To expedite roll-out, BearingPoint modified Ireland’s existing Automated Passport System (APS) (which it also designed back in 2004) to allow the capture of biometric information from the applicant’s photograph.
