DHS OK's Ontario's driver licences as passport alternative

Business leaders on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border are relieved as DHS confirms Canadian travelers from Ontario can enter the United States with secure documents rather than a passport

Ontario can start producing enhanced drivers’ licences as early as the new year — licenses which will be an acceptable alternative to passports at the Canada-U.S. border, Canadian transportation minister Jim Bradley told the Toronto Star. “I am very confident we can do it in the new year,” he said. Bradley was responding to a report that technically improved drivers’ licences, with uniform requirements on both sides of the border, would be accepted. DHS secretary Michael Chertoff confirmed the report at a trade symposium hosted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency.
