At the upcoming London Olympic Games, more than 150 bomb-sniffing dogs will be on hand to detect any potential threats.

The animals and their handlers will primarily be deployed in Stratford, east London, to keep athletes, attendees, and VIPs safe.

To have an adequate number of dog teams on hand, Security Minister James Brokenshire said teams had to be pulled in from across the United Kingdom’s police forces as well as the military.

The daily number of explosive dog teams working across the Olympic theatre of operations will vary day to day based on operational demand and scheduling, but it is anticipated up to 55 teams will be scheduled per day working in support of the London 2012 organizing committee  on venue security,” Brokenshire added.

According to Brokenshire, the police forces alone are expected to deploy 100 explosive detection dogs on a peak day during the Games.

To keep the dogs fresh, handlers and their K-9 partners will work in eight-hour shifts rotating twenty minutes on duty and twenty minutes off.
