Gemalto continues to dominate ePassport market
Keesing Journal reports that the French company provides travel documents to 30 percent of VWP countries
It was just a few days ago that we noted, in the context of France-based Gemalto’s success in winning the contract to provide Portugal with its new national identification card, that the company’s bread and butter was the ePassport trade. (The company recently reported a 19 percent increase in sales to €42 million.) We were not the only ones thinking so. The Keesing Journal of Documents & Identity reported last week that Gemalto is the leading vendor in the ePassport market with a 30 percent share of the Visa Waiver Program countries, as well as the United States. As we have reported, these countries include France, Estonia, Portugal, Latvia, Singapore, and Slovenia. The Keesing report estimates the volume of e-passports to be issued by the VWP nations at approximately thirty million on an annual basis, while overall annual volume in a couple of year’s time is estimated at around 100 million.
