Specialist in hybrid satellite-terrestrial communications network will operate radio talkgroups which will allow emergency units from several states to cooperate more easily during emergencies

Reston, Virginia-based Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV), a company developing a hybrid satellite-terrestrial communications network, said yesterday that it will operate two Mid-Atlantic States Mutual Aid Radio Talkgroups (MSMART), which will allow emergency responders and public safety officials from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and D.C. more easily to communicate. The satellite-based talkgroups, managed by Allegany County’s Emergency Management Division, will allow jurisdictions to work more easily together on a localized public safety event or disaster. “These talkgroups represent a major step forward in this region’s communications interoperability, particularly when the terrestrial networks are damaged or congested,” said Richard DeVore, chief of the Emergency Management Division for the Allegany County Department of Public Safety.
