New container security standard organization created

Published 29 June 2006

As cargo container security moves to center stage, there is a need for standards to govern the technology and its implementation; a new consortium of industry heavy-weights aims to do just that

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) has joined heavy-weights such as Siemens, Mitsubishi Corporation, J. P. Morgan Chase, Unisys, and other global companies to support new container security standards organization, the creation of which was announced yesterday in Brussels. The new organization, the International Container Standards Organization (ICSO), will be based in Brussels and will work to accelerate the approval of international security standards for ocean-going cargo containers.

ICSO will be led by Christoph Seidelmann, who brings relevant experience to the task: For more than twenty-five years he has served in leadership positions at the International Standards Organisation (ISO), the Bureau International des Containers et du Transport Intermodal, and other international organizations.
