Indian police arrests six individuals trying to smuggle low-grade uranium from India to Nepal;
Last November two groups of yet-to-be-identified individuals attacked the main South African nuclear research center — and one of the groups managed to get into the secure control center before being chased away (see HSDW story). Now this: The Indian police on Monday seized four kg of low-grade uranium and arrested six individuals in Supaul district along the Indo-Nepal border. A police official on yesterday said acting on an intelligence tip-off, four kg of low-grade uranium was seized near Virpur bus stand in Supaul late on 18 February night. The estimated value of the seized uranium is about Rs.50 million in the international market. The police said the operation was conducted with the assistance of Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) personnel. Six individuals, including a schoolteacher and a SSB jawan posted in Assam, were arrested. “We will interrogate the six persons,” the police said.
The police suspect that the seized uranium was being smuggled from Meghalaya to Nepal.
