TWIC roll-out delayed again

Initial enrollment effort in Delaware runs into technical problems on its first day; authorities now estimate a further two month delay

How many more years have I got to let you dog me around,” sings the bluesman, lamenting his mistreatment at his woman’s hands. Such might also be the theme song for the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), which our readers know has seen no end of problems, technical and political, since its inception. Sad to say, it is time to report another one. DHS’s first attempt to begin enrolling employees, at the Wilimington, Delaware port, was suspended on its first day last week in the face of unexpected but unexplained technical problems. As a result, roll-outs across the nation may now face delays, with Delaware port authorities estimating that the problems will take at least sixty days to fix — an estimate echoed by authorities in Virginia as well, who are now pushing back their initial enrollment period until late summer, with full implementation now not expected until the fall. “It’s certainly not an auspicious beginning,” said Delaware’s Lisa Himber.
