Non-lethal weaponsLess-lethal 12-gauge shotgun round for law enforcement unveiled

Innovative new round flattens, or “pancakes,” across a subject’s body on impact rather than keeping its shape as other rounds do

Integrity Ballistics of Boise, Idaho, says that when situations dictate the use of less-lethal force, the smart technology it has incorporated in its Burns 1401 round will provide law enforcement with the right solution.

Nine years of engineering and design efforts by founder and chemical engineer Joe Kolnik led to the development of a round that flattens, or “pancakes,” across a subject’s body on impact rather than keeping its shape as other rounds do. Furthermore, the pancaking effect of the projectile, which holds the same stopping force as other rounds, decreases the chance of harm to the subject

The company says that its studies demonstrate that when deployed at the recommended operating ranges, a sock round can penetrate the skin. The smart technology of the Burns 1401 round improves safety for officers and subjects when used within the operating range of 19-75 feet.

Among the features of the new bullet:

  • Polymer “bullet” material designed to flatten on impact
  • Appropriate force to stop a threat with less chance of skin penetration
  • Reduces the risk of soft tissue damage
  • Designed for all 12-gauge shotgun models
  • Visible orange shell for easy recognition
