L-3 explosive detection systems to be installed in Beijing airport

China is beefing up airport security, and the one Beijing airport, the main gateway to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, is buying popular L-3 explosive detection systems

The Security and Detection Systems subsidiary of New York-based L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) will supply Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) with its MVT-HR multiview tomography explosives detection systems. L-3 will initially design, install, and maintain twenty-two MVT-HR systems, as well as provide eighty-one operator workstations for the BCIA Terminal 3 hold-baggage screening system. BCIA is the host airport for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.”

Designed to meet the most stringent explosives detection standards of regulatory agencies worldwide, the MVT-HR’s high-resolution technology and patented state-of-the-art image processing offer the best on-screen threat resolution and analysis capacity currently available in a multi-view computed tomography explosives detection system.”

We are extremely pleased that BCIA has chosen L-3 as a key supplier for this critically important airport expansion initiative,” said Thomas Ripp, president of L-3 Security and Detection Systems. “The integration of the MVT-HR hold-baggage system in Terminal 3 underscores not only BCIA’s confidence in our superior technology and expertise, but also marks an important milestone in our relationship with China.””

In late 2005 the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) gave the MVT-HR the Chinese equivalent of explosives detection certification. The networked MVT-HR screens up to 1,800 bags per hour. The MVT-HR systems are already deployed in London’s Heathrow, Amsterdam’s Schiphol, and Australian airports serviced by the Qantas Group.
