Swedish military chief wants fire-proof bras for female pilots

Commander of Swedish military’s helicopter fleet demands fire-proof bras for female pilots; male pilots are already provided with fire-retarding underwear, and Group Commander Michael Byden says his guess is that many female pilots wear them for lack of fire-retarding panties

The commander of the Swedish military’s helicopter fleet has demanded that his female pilots be granted the same degree of fire protection enjoyed by their male counterparts — in the form of flame-proof bras. UPI reports that Group Captain Micael Byden insisted the existing underwear issued to female helicopter pilots simply is not up to the standard enjoyed by their male counterparts. He told local paper Ostgota Correspondenten: “It is a question of basic safety. You can not have anything close to the body that can be set alight when you are flying.” Byden also expressed doubts that “fireproof panties are being provided to female flyers,” and he “guessed” that they are probably obliged to don male fire-retarding smalls.

We note that  Emmenbruecke, Switzerland-based Kermel already supplies French combat helicopter pilots with underwear made of polyamide-imide fibre to protect them from fire.
